Dimensions of the global apple business

In the following text I summed up the results of my research concerning the global apple business.

Food is often transported over long distances. Because of the climatic change a lot of people think that this might be already a big problem, because the transport causes a lot of CO2. If people buy just 10% more regional food, it will already reduce 116.000 tons of Co2.

But a lot of people don’t even know about these facts, so they keep on buying apples from far away instead of apples harvested in their region.

To solve this problem, there are ideas for a sign, that shows the consumer how much CO2 the food he wants to buy caused because of the transport.

As an example of a project like that, Great Britain introduced the so called “Ampelsystem”. The consumer can see if a product is healthy or if it is not. Every product has got a green, orange or red point on it. (Information can be found here)

I think a lot of consumers would choose the product that caused less CO2 , if they saw that on the food they want to buy.

By doing that they could also support the creation of new jobs in their region.

I found a lot of interesting information here.

“The Box That Makes The World Go Round”

Round about two thirds of the world trade productions are transported by see. As a fact without modern shipping globalisation would be unimaginable. There are more than 3,500 cargo ships loaded with about 15 mill. containers sailing the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian ocean today. The “SPIEGEL” magazin also says that the container market is growing nearly two times as fast as the world economy. To transport large quantities over long distances there is no other way than to transport goods by container. Planes are to small and trains can only be used on continents. Transporting goods by container is also very cheap. I’ve read that shipping 20 tons from Asia to Europe coasts as much as a plane ticked from Asia to Europe. The capacity of the ships is expanding rapidly. Most of the ships can already transport 6,000 to 7,000 standart containers. Especially mobile phones and toys from China are transported with containers to Europe. Aa a result four of the ten biggest harbours are in China. Although the transport market seems to be a market for the future, critical remarks can also be heared. It might be only a question of time when overcapicities will slow down the development.

What I think about…

I don’t have one topic that I like best. So far I like the new book, and I hope I get to know more differents about America and England. For me this story about the man who comes from America and spent some years in England is interesting. If I’ll do something like an exchange -maybe after I pass the Abitur- I would choose England and not America. One reason is that after a year in America I would probably be very fat because of the fast food and I must say that I really like this britisch accent:P So maybe this book confirms me that for my personal needs England would be a good choise…

Concerning the English lessons, I’m looking forward to reading a lot of interesting articles and things like that, because it is so boring just to read stories from the englisch school book. The fact that you read articles about things that are happening right now makes things more interesting.

I also try my best to learn 20 new words per week:)
